The U.S. Department of Commerce has imposed a 93.5% anti-dumping duty on Chinese graphite

Sunday,Jul 20,2025

The U.S. Department of Commerce has made an important decision to impose a preliminary anti-dumping duty of 93.5% on graphite products imported from China, claiming that these key battery materials are "unfairly subsidized." This move is not without reason. As early as December last year, the American Association of Active Anode Materials Producers filed a complaint. After relevant investigations, it was determined that these graphite materials, which are key components of electric vehicle batteries, were sold in the United States at prices below fair market value.

According to the fact sheet released by the U.S. Department of Commerce, the single anti-dumping margin and cash deposit rate for all Chinese producers were determined to be 93.5%. It is worth noting that, combined with the previous tariffs, this decision will cause the total U.S. tariff on Chinese graphite to soar to 160%.

Graphite occupies a vital position in the field of electric vehicle batteries. It is the main material used specifically for anodes. However, the domestic graphite production in the United States is far from meeting its own needs, and most of the graphite is imported. Last year alone, the United States imported about 180,000 tons of graphite, two-thirds of which came from China.

The trade organization that initiated the complaint explicitly accused Chinese companies of dumping graphite on the US market, believing that this behavior seriously weakened the competitiveness of local suppliers. However, the US Department of Commerce's ruling is only a preliminary result, and it comes with a warning that the final ruling will be made before December 5.
