Intel acquires chip maker eASIC to reduce CPU dependence

Monday,Jul 16,2018

According to foreign media reports, Intel plans to acquire eASIC, a small chip maker, but has not disclosed the terms of the eASIC agreement.

It is reported that eASIC is located in Santa Clara, California, USA. After completing the acquisition, approximately 120 employees will join Intel's Programmable Solutions division. In 2015, Intel set up a programmable solutions division after spending $16.7 billion to acquire chip maker Altera. In the context of the decline in the PC and CPU markets, this acquisition has expanded Intel's revenue-generating base.

In this regard, Dan McNamara, head of Intel's programmable solutions division, said, "Chip programming is not done in the field, but in the factory. The cost of programming the chip at the factory is still hundreds of thousands of dollars, but only a few months. It can be done in less than two years."
