The EU has conditionally approved Qualcomm's plans to buy NXP Semiconductors, but there is still a tough battle between Qualcomm and Broadcom trying to acquire it.
The European Commission said Qualcomm's proposal for a patent license eliminates concerns that the transaction could affect chip sales. Qualcomm promised not to acquire some NXP patents related to near field communications. Qualcomm will also maintain the existing license terms for NXP's Mifare technology used on the London subway card system for a period of eight years and will ensure that the NXP chip will interoperate with other chips.
Quickly completing the acquisition of NXP may make it more difficult for Qualcomm to be annexed, regulators will need to conduct additional scrutiny of Wi-Fi chip-related content. Qualcomm declined a $ 105 billion takeover bid from Broadcom last year, and Qualcomm also told shareholders that bids underestimated the value of the company while "accompanied by significant regulatory uncertainty."
Qualcomm said in an emailed statement that after the EU and South Korea's regulatory approval has been obtained, the only thing that needs to be obtained is the antitrust approval of China.
